The Department of Metaphysics and Epistemology of the Faculty of Philosophy at Radboud University Nijmegen (Netherlands) seeks an outstanding PhD student for a project within the research programme 'The Project of a Hermeneutic Philosophy'. The four-year PhD position involves the writing of a doctoral dissertation, teaching at the Faculty of Philosophy, and participation in the activities of the department and the research programme.
Application should include a CV as well as a description of the project the applicant would like to carry out (research proposal of no more than 3000 words).
Candidates should possess an MA (or equivalent) in philosophy. They should be fluent in English and should be able to read French or German.
The Faculty of Philosophy carries out teaching and research in all domains of philosophy and has approx. 300 full-time students and 55 teachers and researchers. The research of the Department of Metaphysics and Epistemology focuses on the hermeneutic tradition in the 19th century (Schleiermacher, Dilthey), as well as on the authors that continued this tradition in the course of the 20th century from a phenomenological perspective (Heidegger, Gadamer, Ricoeur, Derrida). This line of research mainly focuses on the meaning and status of being, language, and truth in the hermeneutic tradition. In addition, the relation of hermeneutic philosophy to scholastic philosophy and to the philosophy of the Enlightenment is studied.
